This module seeks to clarify the rationale for governance, first by looking at its early origins, the importance of defining the purpose of the organisation, and the development of codes that support and build confidence in the entity.
We then reflect on the differences between private and public sector governance and take the NHS as a case study to show how governance has evolved in a major public service. The pace and the importance of governance has become much more prominent in recent years due to multifactorial reasons including globalisation and increased public scrutiny.
Despite the differences, there are an overarching set of principles that apply to both public and private organisations.
